Understanding Health Care Protocols

When I adopted a pair of twins, one of the first things that struck me was how many doctor's appointments they needed to go to. As we took them to all of their baby well-checks, I realised that these appointments were designed to find and address issues early before they caused other problems. Fortunately, our family paediatrician found a few critical problems that we were able to resolve head-on, and it was immensely helpful. Check out this blog for information about health care, preventative care, and helping your child to enjoy a better life. I know that some of these tips helped me, and I know that they can help you too.

Three Traits A Neonatology Nurse Should Possess

Blog

If you are interested in a career in the health care field and enjoy being around newborn babies, you may be thinking about a neonatology career. Neonatologists and neonatal nurses are in high demand right now. However, it takes a special type of person to work around newborn babies, particularly those that are ill or premature. If you are considering going into this field, here are three traits that you should possess if you want to make a great neonatology nurse.

Must Love and Be Comfortable Around Newborn Babies

Not every person is comfortable with newborn babies. They are tiny and they cannot speak to you and tell you when something is wrong. They also need diaper changes and bottle feedings, something most other patients don't require. If you are considering a position in the neonatology unit, spend some time around young infants first. If you find that you are not comfortable around them or don't enjoy the tasks that go along with being around a baby, this may not be the right medical field for you to go into.

Should Be a Caring, Empathetic Person

Not everyone is empathetic. Some people are extremely straight forward and unemotional. And while this is not always a bad thing, you should have a caring and empathetic side if you are going to be working as a neonatology nurse. You will be dealing with brand new parents. Some of these parents may look to you for guidance and reassurance. Others may be tired and stressed out. And others may have a sick or premature infant, and they need you to understand why they are worried or scared for their child. Understanding people and being able to be compassionate while doing your job is extremely important in this medical field.

Stress Management and Coping Skills

The last trait that you should have if you are considering working as a neonatal nurse is stress management and stress coping skills. It can be extremely rewarding to work in this field. But it can also be stressful and emotional. You may have days where babies cry on end for seemingly no reason. And you may have days where a newborn dies in front of your eyes. You need to have the skillset to manage your stress and cope with stress and loss or you may struggle immensely with your own emotions in this field.

There are many different fields you can go into if you are interested in working in the healthcare field. If you love babies and are considering a career working with them, you may be considering a neonatology career. Currently, neonatology nurses are in high demand. But this career path isn't right for everyone. If you are considering working in this field, you must love and be comfortable around newborns, you must be a compassionate and caring person and you must have stress management skills in order to thrive and excel.
