Understanding Health Care Protocols

When I adopted a pair of twins, one of the first things that struck me was how many doctor's appointments they needed to go to. As we took them to all of their baby well-checks, I realised that these appointments were designed to find and address issues early before they caused other problems. Fortunately, our family paediatrician found a few critical problems that we were able to resolve head-on, and it was immensely helpful. Check out this blog for information about health care, preventative care, and helping your child to enjoy a better life. I know that some of these tips helped me, and I know that they can help you too.

Sports Medicine Techniques For Parents

Blog

If you have any children who play competitive sports, you will no doubt soon become familiar with the art of sports medicine. Sports medicine is a specific branch of medicine that prevents and treats injuries related to sports. If your child is playing contact sports in school, there will likely be a sports medicine specialist on hand. The major sports that need sports medicine attention are football, soccer, softball, baseball, volleyball, and lacrosse. It is a good idea for you as a parent to learn some sports medicine techniques in order to help your child stay safe while playing. A few easy techniques that you could learn how to do in order to prevent and treat injuries include but are not limited to:

Wrapping Ankles

Since most competitive sports involve running, there is almost always a need to learn how to wrap an ankle before play. Wrapping your child's ankle will lessen the likelihood of them twisting their ankle, keeping it more straight and solid. Be careful not to wrap the ankle too tightly, since they do still need to be able to run. Learning this simple technique will ensure that your child is protected since there is often a line of athletes waiting to get taped before any game. With a sports medicine tech doing all the work, there are many who go without protection.

Wrapping Wrists

In sports where throwing an object is vital, such as baseball, softball, and football, many athletes choose to also wrap their wrists before play. This helps to ensure that the wrist will not be injured while sliding or batting in baseball and softball, and during a tackle in football. Linebackers in football usually also wrap their wrists, since they are putting weight on them during each down.

Icing Joints

Once play is done, it is a very good idea to wrap bags of ice around the joints of your athletes. This will allow any swelling from overuse during the game to be calmed, preventing further damage. Depending on how competitive the athlete is, some also choose to have an ice bath to help their bodies recover after an intense game.

In conclusion, these few sports medicine techniques can keep your children from getting injured while playing competitive sports, or help them to heal quickly. If they do sustain an injury that you do not know how to treat, there are medical doctors who specialize in sports medicine who are more than willing to treat your child. Look up a sports medicine clinic near you.
